Common Core for ELLs

Lesson Plans

The following units for grades 1, 4, and 8 are aligned to the Common Core State Standards and target English language learners' (ELLs) literacy and language needs. They were developed by a group of teachers from Albuquerque, New Mexico, working in collaboration with the Albuquerque Teachers Federation and Dr. Diane August.

Classroom videos of the lesson plans being taught in Albuquerque classrooms are also available.

Grade 1: Burro's Tortillas

Burro from Burro's Tortillas

This unit is based upon the picture book Burro's Tortillas by Terri Fields, a Southwestern adaptation of The Little Red Hen chosen by the teachers for its relevance to their students' cultural experiences.

Grade 4: Cinderella

Cinderella's shoe

This unit is based on a picture-book version of Cinderella, written and illustrated by Barbara McClintock, chosen by the teachers for its rich language and imagery.

Grade 8: "The Story of an Hour"

The Story of an Hour by Kate Chopin

This unit is based on "The Story of an Hour," a short story written by Kate Chopin in 1894, chosen for its themes, historical context, and illustrations of irony.

These lesson plans are the result of the hard work of a number of individuals, including the members of our Teacher Cadre in Albuquerque, NM; and Dr. Ellen Bernstein and the staff of the Albuquerque Teachers Federation.
