Nevada: ELL Resources

As of the 2012-13 school year, Nevada's schools were home to more than 77,000 English language learners (ELLs), which marks a 32% increase from the 2002-2003 school year (Migration Policy Institute, 2015). Currently, the most common five languages spoken by ELLs in Nevada are Spanish, Tagalog, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Amharic.

Nevada is a member of WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment). WIDA is a consortium of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English language learners which offers states programming for identifying and annually assessing the English language development of its English learners.

Nevada State Education Association

Nevada State Education Association is a National Education Association State Affiliate that regularly lobbies legislators for the resources schools need, campaigns for higher professional standards for the teaching profession, and files legal actions to protect academic freedom and the rights of school employees.

Professional Language Association of Nevada (PLAN)

The mission of PLAN is:

  1. To stimulate the interest of all peoples everywhere in the learning and preserving of skills in world languages;
  2. To foster discussion and interchange of ideas relative to the study and teaching of  languages;
  3. To recognize excellence in the study and teaching of world languages through participation in the activities of the Association;
  4. To support language instructors at all levels (primary, secondary, post-secondary) by providing resources and establishing relationships with other educators;
  5. To join with affiliate organizations at state, regional and national levels in advocating for the learning of world languages.

Nevada PEP

The mission of Nevada PEP is to increase the opportunities for home, community and school success for children with disabilities, including those who are at risk or who have serious emotional disturbances, their families and their service providers, through education, encouragement and empowerment activities.

Nevada: Seal of Biliteracy

Nevada adopted the Seal of Biliteracy in 2015. The Seal of Biliteracy is an award given by a school, district, or state in recognition of students who have studied and attained proficiency in two or more languages by high school graduation.
