Reach Out and Read

A program designed to encourage reading in families and increase children's exposure to literature. Doctors and nurses are trained to read with parents and children at check-ups and then books are given to the family. Lists local programs and information on literacy resources.

ALA: Every Child Ready to Read

The Public Library Association and the Association for Library Service to Children have incorporated the latest research into a series of parent and caregiver workshops designed to provide public libraries with vital tools to help prepare parents for their critical role as their child's first teacher. These tools were developed by Dr. Grover C. Whitehurst and Dr. Christopher Lonigan, well-known researchers in emergent literacy, and have been tested and refined by library demonstrations sites around the country.

Stern Center for Language and Learning

The Stern Center is a non-profit learning and literacy center providing direct service to individuals (instruction and diagnostic services), professional development for educators, and research on learning and literacy.

Learning Ally

Founded in 1948 as Recording for the Blind, Learning Ally serves more than 300,000 K-12, college and graduate students, veterans and lifelong learners — all of whom cannot read standard print due to blindness, visual impairment, dyslexia, or other learning disabilities. Learning Ally's collection of more than 65,000 digitally recorded textbooks and literature titles — downloadable and accessible on mainstream as well as specialized assistive technology devices — is the largest of its kind in the world.

Reading Is Fundamental

RIF develops and delivers children and family literacy programs that help prepare young children for reading and motivate school-age children to read.

Read Across America

Initially created as a one-day event to celebrate reading on Dr. Seuss's birthday, March 2, NEA's Read Across America has grown into a nationwide initiative that promotes reading every day.

NRC is a professional organization for individuals who share an interest in research and the dissemination of information about literacy and literacy instruction.

In2Books

In2Books, the largest nonprofit literacy program in Washington, DC, helps students become successful readers, writers, and thinkers through a combination of challenging work for students and literacy professional development for their teachers.

Get Ready to Read!

Get Ready to Read!'s program vision is that all preschool children will have the skills they need to learn to read when they enter school. This site is part of NCLD's initiative to provide parents, educators, health-care professionals, and advocates with tools to help build early literacy skills, including a bilingual early literacy screening tool.
