Iowa

As of the 2007-2008 school year, Iowa's schools were home to more than 19,700 English language learners (ELLs), which marks a 145% increase from the 1997-1998 school year (NCELA, 2010). The top five languages or language groups spoken by ELLs in Iowa are Spanish, Pennsylvania Dutch, German, French, and Arabic (EPE, 2009).

Home Language Survey: A Home Language Survey is required for all newly enrolling students. The Home Language Survey may be found in a secure site that requires a password at transact.com. Details are provide on page 13 of the ELL Handbook.

Placement Exam: Iowa allows for flexibility of assessment instruments. Suggestions are found on page 58 of the ELL Handbook.
