Oklahoma

As of the 2007-2008 school year, Oklahoma's schools were home to more than 35,300 English language learners (ELLs), which marks a 6.7% increase from the 1997-1998 school year (NCELA, 2010). The top five languages or language groups spoken by ELLs in Oklahoma are Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, North American Indian languages, and Chinese (EPE, 2009).

Oklahoma is a member of WIDA (World-Class Instructional Design and Assessment), joining in 2006. WIDA is a consortium of states dedicated to the design and implementation of high standards and equitable educational opportunities for English language learners which offers states programming for identifying and annually assessing the English language development of its English learners.

AFT Oklahoma is the State Affiliate of the American Federation of Teachers.

Oklahoma Education Association

Oklahoma Education Association is a National Education Association State Affiliate that regularly lobbies legislators for the resources schools need, campaigns for higher professional standards for the teaching profession, and files legal actions to protect academic freedom and the rights of school employees.

Oklahoma State Parent Information Resource Centers

The purpose of the Oklahoma PIRC is to help implement successful and effective parental involvement policies, programs, and activities that lead to improvements in student academic achievement and that strengthen partnerships among parents, teachers, principals, administrators, and other school personnel in meeting the educational needs of children.

Oklahoma TESOL (OKTESOL)

Oklahoma Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Language is a professional association that offers opportunities to develop increased expertise to its members and others working toward the goal of teaching English to speakers of other languages and to nurture effective communication in Oklahoma's multicultural settings while respecting individual language rights.
