"Trevor did it all" Romulus Central School remembers young man killed in CA mass shooting

ROMULUS — As news of a deadly shooting at the Gilroy Garlic Festival in California made it’s way across the country, the small community of Romulus in the finger lakes region learned one of their own was among the victims. 25-year-old Trevor Irby graduated from Romulus Central School in 2012 before receiving his diploma from Keuka College in 2017.

Romulus superintendent Marty Rotz said he first learned of Trevor’s tragic death through social media. Even though he graduated seven years ago, Rotz said Trevor isn’t a face you forget.

“He was a great friend,” said Rotz. “Never mean, never malicious, always caring. His smile, his laugh, you can still hear him and if you knew him you’d never forget him.”

Trevor did it all. A three-sport athlete, prom king, a member of the Nation Honor Society and drama club to name a few.

“The students intermingled everyday..kindergartners all the way up to 12th grade. Trevor was one of those types of role models that younger kids looked up to,” said Rotz.

Trevor took his talents to Keuka College majoring in Biology. Rotz said Trevor had been living in California for a few years before he was shot and killed at the festival. The longtime educator in Romulus said Trevor loved his family, and they loved him more than anything.

“So tough for anybody,” said Rotz. “I know his family is traveling there. Trying to support one another. Can’t imagine the feeling of having to travel across the country knowing you’re going through a loss like this. We certainly are thinking and praying for them hoping peace comes their way soon.”

Keuka College is planning a vigil for Trevor. A date and time has not yet been set.
