Helping Destiny Find a "Just Right" Book
Meet Destiny, a fourth-grade student at Claremont Immersion Elementary. Students at this bilingual school in Arlington, VA spend half of the day in English and half of the day in Spanish. They receive language arts and literacy instruction in both languages. On this day, Destiny is choosing a new book for Spanish independent reading time. Her teacher, Alejandra Rojas, has some ideas about what books will be "just right" — something challenging but not too difficult, and something enjoyable. Miss Rojas shows the importance of getting to know students' strengths, challenges, and interests, and the power of a meaningful conversation.
